THE WORDS by Jean-Paul Sartre. Not exactly a necessary read by an otherwise excellent author/thinker. I'm not dissing the late great Jean-Paul, both Nausea and The Wall are terrific, just as his existentialist works. The more I read, the more of a fan I become. However, if you're interested in the man, try to get your hands on a proper biography instead.

Hey Bloodaxe, I've just read that ABBA biography you recommended. You're right they really ARE a great band. Also, just read the Neil Young biography 'Shakey' which was really interesting although I could have done with less of the author's personal appearances and opinions. Just started 'Dancing With The Virgins' by Stephen Booth, a murder mystery set in the Derbyshire Peak District. Lightweight, but entertaining.

I've read that as well. It was one hell of a brick to pile through, but from what I remember, I enjoyed it.

Re: The latest book you read was...
I'm about a third through Harry Mulisch's The Discovery Of Heaven. If anyone's looking for something to read, I'd recommend Joey Goebel's Torture The Artist. He also has a new novel coming out soon called Commonwealth (and one from before Torture The Artist called The Anomalies). It's really funny, satiric stuff done really well. A kind of unexpected meta satire. Anyone know when Steve's novel's coming out?

Re: The latest book you read was...
a few months ago i read doris kearns goodwin's 'no ordinary time' about fdr during wwii. it won a pulitzer. a very detailed account of both the politics associated with mobilzing the country to war and, more importantly, the relationship roosevelt had with eleanor. a great good read. having enjoyed this, i sought kearns goodwin's 'team of rivals. the political genius of abraham lincoln.' there's much to write about lincoln, and even more about this book. it's just as compelling as the fdr biography. waiting for this to arrive i read a biography about timothy leary, the psychedic psychiatrist of 'turn on, tune in, and drop out 1960s fame. i grew up during his 60s notoriety days and am always interested in stories of the times. i'm nearly finished a book about ulyses s grant. this seemed like the logical choice after learning the washington politics of the civil war from team of rivals. now.....i probably ought get off the biography wagon and take in some fiction. i'll see what strikes my fancy when i finish up grant's spin the white house. he's dealing with reconstruction at this point in the account and fighting corruption in various places in his administration. b

Re: The latest book you read was...
Wow, you all kind of make me feel inadequate! I'm as passionate about food as I am about music, so I end up reading mostly food writers - Anthony Bourdain, Jeffery Steingarten, etc. I'm sure this will make some of you scoff, but right now I'm reading Eckert Tolle "A New Earth." I'm ready for the snark because of the Oprah connection and all, but I have to tell you that so far, the guy makes some sense. I ain't like I hadn't figured out a lot of what he says on my own, but it's interesting stuff.

Re: The latest book you read was...
OK, ok the last books I read were probably by James Patterson, Dean Koontz or possibly Grisham. I also read alot of Johannes Simmel, Erich Remarque and Charlotte Link. Guess I'm not as highbrow as the rest of you's Anyway, I should get Brownie Points for attending the "War Requiem" at the Duke University Chappell last weekend. We went down to Durham, NC for a "Billy Joe Shaver" concert. The concert was canceled so we took in the Requiem instead. Now that's what I call "diversity". So there!!!

I am reading Teacher Man by Frank McCourt but I just finished East of Eden by Steinbeck. That’s a new favorite of mine which I’m sure I’ll read again eventually.
