    Guilty Pleasures

Come on, fess up, what is the music you slip on and listen to when noone is around, that might be embarrassing should your friend/loved ones discover your secret passions?  Who can tell what's on an i-Pod anyway.

I mean, there is an A-List hollywood film about Abba music, road productions of "Mama Mia" touring as we speak.  Someone is still listening to that stuff.

Alright, I'll go first;  Billy Idol, Greatest Hits. A cover of classic Tommy James & the Shondells, "Mony, Mony,"  "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell,"  "Dancing With Myself."  Crank it up.

A photo on the cd cover shows Billy sitting in a medieval throne placed in a desert wash, looking down at the sand, he may even be slightly chagrined, head hung low.

This is cathartic, might even discuss my fascination with Enya music some day.

Every now and then, I put the best of The Everly Brothers on.  There's something unique about them that most people would probably take the piss out of!

Now that is brave, a real troubador.

Everly Bros are good, in my book, puzzled why anyone would give you heaps about that..

The wife and I used to dance with the kids when they were little to "Billie Jean," "Beat It."  We're all much better after therapy, though I don't know if the boys will ever forgive me.

I had a little break down last week and played the entirety of Prince's album Purple Rain!  It was fun!  :)

Now that's what I was getting at, clumsily I admit.

I have an Ike Turner cd that I break out - totally politically incorrect - I think the girl in the cd store shot me daggers when I purchased it, but it could have been my imagination, guilty conscience.

Ike has a bad rap, desevedly, but, looking back, he was a pretty important r&b/ blues figure - contributed a lot. Steely Dan coleader Donald Fagen wrote a piece for Slate Magazine when Ike died, very good, balanced view of his career I thought.

not really ashamed of this in any way but...it does produce its share of 'eye rolls' from a large variety of friends ...I LOVE a large chunk of the early output (say...first 5-6 CDs) from Cheap Trick.  the first 3 studio disks are absolutely necessary for me.

Haha rmcl!  I like how you justified Ike's career and contribution to music!  :)  I have to think up something like that for Prince!  LOL!

They might both be "control freaks," but Ike would probably win the Meaner Guy prize.  Don Fagen (just read it again) seemed to think Ike's talents were more organizational than r&b innovator, but they were formidable.

Just recalled picking up (many yearsa go)a classic vinyl record, produced by super-weirdo Phil Spector and his Wall of Sound - "River Deep mountain High."  I don't even feel guilty about listening to that one, maybe  an underground hit at the time.  Spector quit the business for awhile, as the story goes, because of its sluggish sales of that recording.  Check that one out, Ike & Tina Turner, River Deep, Mountain High.

Yes!  River Deep, Mountain High is indeed a GREAT song!  I've always really enjoyed that one too!

    Re: Guilty Pleasures

Should have mentioned "River Deep Mountain High " is an lp, an album, aside from the single.

Perhaps all of Phil Spector's productions could be considered guilty pleasures, considering his lengthy history of abuse and general insanity, incidents with firearms - was married to Ronnie of the Ronettes, put her on a shelf, very abusive, according to her years later.  Like Ike, he was a talented guy, wrote "Rose in Spanish Harlem," and other great songs, produced the Righteous Bros and was a hot producer for many years.
