Unadan:I heard Steve was into TVZ so I checked out a few of his CDs from my library. All I can say is I am not a fan of his music so a covers record of his (overrated) stuff doesn't really excite me too much. I mean is Pancho and Lefty his best song? Meh.
"Pancho and Lefty" is a masterpiece. There is so much to it, largely because there is so little to it. Good writers know which details to leave out and which to put in. Townes knew exactly which details to put in, like the horse as fast as polished steel, and which to leave out, like the major facts of the story. What happened exactly? Why did Lefty split for Ohio anyway?
I'm curious about which CDs you listened to. I hope it was the studio albums. Townes was a true poet, a bard, a troubadour, and putting him in the studio distorted and disarranged his music. It's a true case of "more is less." One voice and one guitar says it all, and messing with that only messes the whole thing up.
