    Steve's upcoming album

I read that Steve said that his next album would be a collection of Townes Van Zandt songs.

Does anyone have any information on it?

    Thanks.

Here's the article, published yesterday, that has that statement (it's near the bottom): http://www.wickedlocal.com/newburyport/fun/entertainment/arts/x593754472/Folk-singer-and-rabble-rouser-Steve-Earle-hits-Newburyport-next-week

But, just because something is on the internet, that doesn't mean it's true . . .

Good article, thanks for the link.

Here's the part at the end:

    J. C. Lockwood:
The next album will be a collection of tunes by the influential, and difficult-to-characterize, singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, “which I think I can handle myself,” says Earle. He will follow that up with a new band album, so the beats will probably not make it there either.

Well, it's a direct quote, so it looks pretty good. I hope it becomes a reality!

I heard Steve was into TVZ so I checked out a few of his CDs from my library.  All I can say is I am not a fan of his music so a covers record of his (overrated) stuff doesn't really excite me too much.  I mean is Pancho and Lefty his best song?  Meh.

"Pancho and Lefty" is a masterpiece. There is so much to it, largely because there is so little to it. Good writers know which details to leave out and which to put in. Townes knew exactly which details to put in, like the horse as fast as polished steel, and which to leave out, like the major facts of the story. What happened exactly? Why did Lefty split for Ohio anyway?

I'm curious about which CDs you listened to. I hope it was the studio albums. Townes was a true poet, a bard, a troubadour, and putting him in the studio distorted and disarranged his music. It's a true case of "more is less." One voice and one guitar says it all, and messing with that only messes the whole thing up.

TVZ is fantastic imho. I wouldn't pick Pancho as his best though.. or maybe. Anyway I would suggest you to pick up a live album if you haven't. I find them much easier to get into than his studio albums. But if you say 'meh' to Pancho and Lefty maybe not.

Samstone - I'm willing to give TVZ another try.  All I have currently are the following:  Absolutely Nothing, A Far Cry from Dead, and The Highway Kind.  Are there other (better) releases I should try?

Townes's very best recording is "Live at the Old Quarter." After that, it's hard to say, but the single-concert live recordings are generally better than the compilation live recordings. The production quality may not be high and Townes might not be in the best of shape, but at least those single-concert live albums are consistent. You might also want to try to find TVZ-Steve-Guy Clark "Together at the Bluebird Cafe. Townes is not exactly at his best, Steve is very good, and Guy is the best of them all.
